Dr. Kimberly Smith currently works with Transformation Nashville and Tennessee State University where she is the Director for the Center of Excellence for Learning Sciences and an adjunct assistant professor for the Colleges of Humans Sciences and Education.  She has over 20 years of experience in the field of early childhood education and has worked as an Early Head Start program director, curriculum coordinator, consultant, trainer, literacy specialist, center manager, and classroom teacher.  Dr. Smith earned her Bachelor’s degree from Chicago State University, Chicago IL; her Master’s from the Tennessee State University, Nashville TN; and her Doctorate from Lipscomb University, Nashville TN. 

Passionate about bridging the divide between misunderstood communities, Mary Kate believes that this process begins with listening to understand, then leveraging whatever privilege exists on behalf of the underserved. Before joining Transformation Nashville, she worked with corporate diversity trainers, educational leaders and researchers in the areas of communication and cultural proficiency. Mary Kate has been a Middle Tennessee resident since childhood and her Nashville roots are generations deep. She currently lives in Murfreesboro with her husband, Joey, and their four children.
